BA in Applied Modern Languages – English-French

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Applied Modern Languages is a study programme based on the idea of European university space and built starting from the educational landmarks embedded in the main European documents on higher education: The Sorbonne Declaration (1998), The Bologna Declaration (1999), The Salamanca Message (2001), The Prague Communiqué (2001). The study programme complies with all the standards specific to the linguistic field: The European Portofolio of Languages (The Council of Europe, 2000), The Common European Framework for Languages (2000) etc. When it was first set up in Romania, by Babes Bolyai University in Cluj (1994), the study programme benefited from the support of European study programmes, being very successful among the applicants.

The Applied Modern Languages study programme has been offered within the University of Pitesti since 2005, it was accredited by ARACIS in 2011 (HG 87/2011) and it is affiliated to the The International Association of Applied Modern Languages (AILEA), based in France.

During the 2014-2017 period the study programme was subsidised through a project granted by  The International Association of Applied Modern Languages.

The Applied Modern Languages study programme weaves interdisciplinarity, plurilingvism and interculturality together. The traning it provides has three main directions: two foreign languages,  English and French (both studied as major languages), a third language – German, Economics, Law and Information Technology.

 The students in Applied Modern Languages qualify as translators, business communication assistants, linguistic and cultural mediation assistants, assistants in terminological research.

Having immediate applicability, the Applied Modern Languages study programme complies with the requirements of the labour market both in Romania and the European Union. 

ADMISSION TO APPLIED MODERN LANGUAGES STUDY PROGRAMME

- file-based admission;

- the applicants are required to have at least an intermediate level of proficiency in English and French. The Department of Applied Foreign Languages provides, free of charge, tuition to the students whose level of language proficiency does not meet the minimum requirements yet.

UNDERGRADUATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

COMPETITIONS

Undergraduate research activity focuses on Legal Linguistics (French), Business Language (English and French), English and French Civilization, Theory and Practice of Translation (English and French). The results of the researh are presented within the student scientific communication sessions organised by the Department of Applied Foreign Languages on an annual basis and published in BSLEA (Bulletin scientifique en Langues Etrangères Appliquées), e-publication hosted by the Agency of Francophone University Agency (AUF).

The undergraduates take part in numerous competitions and festivals, such as: the Mot à Monde literary translation competition, the Plume d’Or competition, the  Bonjour Jeunesse music festival, the Francophone Students’ Regional Festival.

PERSPECTIVES FOR FURTHER QUALIFICATION

 -The BA study programme in Applied Modern Languages can be continued through a wide range of MA programmes: Specialised Languages and Computer-Assisted Translations, Translation-Interpretation, Conference Interpretation, Foreign Languages for Business, Applied Linguistics, Cultural Studies, etc.

- The programme aims at a wide range of professional fields: public relations services, international relations services, banks, public institutions, governmental and non-governmantal organisations, European organisations, translators’ offices, tourism, advertising, communication, etc.

- Students are given the possibility of attending the psycho-pedagogical module, being able thus, on graduation, to work in education. 

FURTHER INFORMATION

- The AML study programme provides German as a complementary mandatory discipline (six terms) and Spanish as an optional discipline (four terms).
